Box Breathing...
…has been invaluable for me, it is so simple, requires very little time and is very effective. Box Breathing will help bring the breath back to its normal rhythm and subsequently calm the body and mind – something we could all do with more of!
So many of us, myself included, can become overwhelmed with everyday life. I will hold my hand up and say that there have been times in the past that I felt my head would explode with juggling lists and so on!
I have found myself slipping into fight or flight mode over the smallest of things because my body was already in a stress state. As my body was already in a this state, something as small as picking up the crunchy nut butter instead of smooth nut butter and I’d notice my breath would become more shallow.
Now, goes without saying – we can’t blame the nut butter (although crunchy nut butter, no thank you!). However, it has become apparent that when I take the time to focus on my breathing every day for even as little as a minute or two, my head isn’t in this constant overwhelmed state. So when I do pick up the wrong nut butter, it’s not a big deal – phew!
Let's Get Breathing...
The beauty of box breathing is it can be done pretty much anywhere. Here’s how…
- Sit in an upright position
- Feet flat on the floor
- Close your eyes or keep your gaze low
- Breath in through your nose for a count of 4 seconds
- Hold your breath for 4 seconds
- Breath out through your nose for 4 seconds
- Hold on the out breath for 4 seconds
And repeat at least 3 times or until you feel a sense of calm.
Simple and Soothing – like smooth nut butter!
